The Ladies Education Society Awards Scholarships at Spring Tea Event

The 160-year-old Ladies Education Society awards scholarships, continuing a tradition established during the Civil War

On Thursday, April 28, the Ladies Education Society (LES) held a Spring Tea to honor Grinnell College seniors with scholarships. The Ladies Education Society was not able to hold its annual event last year because of the pandemic and so recognized both 2020 and 2021 recipients at this year's event. Founded in 1862 during the Civil War, the society annually awards scholarships to women students based on academic excellence, character, leadership and financial need. 

2021 scholarship recipients

  • Hannah Beshey, history and art history major  
  • Katelle Donkor, political science and general science–biology major 
  • Annie Estes, political science major  
  • Noa Goldman, English and French major 
  • Camila Hassler, political science and Spanish major   
  • Jocelyn Shackelford, biology major

Michael Mackenzie, professor of art history and spouse of Grinnell College President Anne F. Harris, fulfills the tradition of inviting the college president’s spouse to serve as president of LES. Additional 2022 LES board members are Valerie Benoist, Lesley Delmenico, Ann Ellis, Evelyn Freeman, Leslie Gregg-Jolly, Sarah Purcell, and Deanna Shorb. LES officers thank outgoing members Angela Voos and Astrid Henry for their service as LES board members.
