Student biochemistry research this summer included:

  • Studying the molecular behavior of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which are involved in a variety of aspects of human neurological health.
  • Using mass spectrometry, hydrogen/deuterium exchange and computational chemistry to characterize the molecular interations and dynamics in macromolecules such as peptides and proteins.
  • Studying methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), a key enzyme in folate metabolism. Folate deficiencies have been associated with many health issues, including an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and neural tube defects in fetuses.
