From the lush landscapes and bustling events to innovative programs and family-friendly activities, the season offers a unique glimpse into the summer around town. Campus Beauty 

Grinnell College’s campus in summer is a picturesque blend of lush greenery and vibrant blooms. The manicured lawns and shaded pathways provide a serene backdrop for students and visitors alike, while the warm sunlight enhances the campus’s natural beauty. The seasonal transformation invites exploration and appreciation of the tranquil outdoor spaces that define Grinnell’s summer charm.

Summer Mentored Advanced Projects (MAPs)

Grinnell College’s summer Mentored Advanced Projects offered students the opportunity to engage in scholarly or creative work under faculty guidance. These projects, which included research and creative endeavors, allowed students to integrate their academic knowledge and skills while producing work worthy of broader dissemination.

Grinnell College Golf Course 

First Tee Program 

Grinnell College Golf Course proudly hosted the First Tee Program, an initiative dedicated to youth development through golf. This program successfully merged the game of golf with a life skills curriculum, helping young participants build character and confidence. The program’s summer sessions were filled with active learning experiences that fostered resilience and inner strength.

Light the Night Event 

The Light the Night Challenge at Grinnell College Golf Course transformed the ninth hole into a glowing arena for exciting competition. This vibrant event, reminiscent of Topgolf, featured player vs. player match play with single elimination. Participants enjoyed a unique evening experience, as the course was illuminated for this dynamic challenge. Congratulations to this year’s champion Devin Wells!

Golf Cart Parade on the Fourth of July 

The annual Golf Cart Parade on July 4 was a highlight of summer festivities, bringing families together for a fun-filled celebration. The parade, featuring creatively decorated golf carts, was a joyful event that showcased community spirit.

Prairie Burn 

Grinnell College proudly sponsored the Prairie Burn 100, a one-day event celebrating outdoor activity and community engagement. Held in early June, the event featured gravel bike rides and a 5K Fun Run, offering participants new routes and challenges. The 2024 edition included 25-, 50-, and 100-mile rides, with the 100-mile race providing a rigorous challenge for avid cyclists.

Grinnell Farmers Market 

The Grinnell Farmers Market, open from May to October, is a bustling hub of activity every Thursday and Saturday. Located on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Broad Street, the market features fresh produce, local goods, and engaging activities, making it a popular destination for community members and visitors.

Grinnell College’s “Market Science” initiative brought scientific research directly to the Grinnell Farmers Market. This innovative program allowed summer research students and faculty to interact with community members, sharing their findings and engaging in discussions about science’s impact on everyday life. The initiative aimed to enhance public understanding of science and support students in developing effective communication skills.

Storytime Art in the Park 

The Grinnell College Museum of Art and the Drake Community Library collaborated to offer “Story Time and Art in the Park,” providing children and families with free, hands-on art and literacy activities. These sessions featured a variety of creative projects, including drawing, collage, painting, and bookmaking. Supported by the Grinnell Education Partnership, Grinnell Mutual, and AmeriCorps, the program aimed to foster creativity and literacy in a fun outdoor setting.
