Updates from the Office of the Dean: New Interim Directors and Associate Dean Announced

Interim Directors Appointed: Liz Queathem and Andrew Kaufman 

Dean of Academic Affairs Beronda Montgomery recently announced that Liz Queathem, senior lecturer in biology, has been selected as the interim director of the Center for Prairie Studies for the 2024–25 academic term. With her extensive experience and active involvement in the Center for Prairie Studies, Queathem brings a wealth of knowledge and dedication to her new role. 

Similarly, Andrew Kaufman, professor of studio art, has been appointed as the interim director of the Wilson Program for the 2024–25 academic term. Kaufman’s longstanding commitment and contributions as a member of the Wilson Committee make him well-suited to lead the program during this interim period. 

Departure of Timothy Arner: Sabbatical Leave and Research Focus 

Timothy Arner, associate dean of curriculum and academic programs and professor of English, will be stepping down from his role at the end of this academic year to embark on a year-long sabbatical. His departure marks the end of six years of invaluable service to the College, during which he played a pivotal role in numerous academic initiatives and programs at Grinnell. 

Welcome to Nick Phillips: New Associate Dean of Curriculum and Academic Programs 

Grinnell welcomes Nick Phillips, associate professor of Spanish, as the new associate dean of curriculum and academic programs, effective July 1, 2024. Phillips’ diverse experience and commitment to fostering interdisciplinary connections position him well to drive innovative curricular efforts at Grinnell. 

As the College prepares for these transitions, the entire community extends its gratitude to Arner for his exceptional contributions and extends warm congratulations to Queathem, Kaufman, and Phillips as they assume their new roles. Their leadership promises to enrich the academic experience and uphold the values of excellence at Grinnell College.
