A World of Perspectives: Welcoming the Class of 2027

In Grinnell, excitement fills the air as the campus prepares to welcome the incoming class of 2027. For the second consecutive year, Grinnell is proud to announce that its first-year student body again comprises a multicultural majority, reflecting the College’s academic mission and commitment to inclusivity and diversity. This fall, the incoming first-year class of approximately 460 new students will join an already outstanding student body that engages the College’s excellent academic reputation, individually advised curriculum, and opportunities to gain knowledge and experience both inside and outside of the classroom.

The 2023 admission cycle saw an impressive rise in applications, with 13,335 aspiring first-year students and 109 transfer students initiating applications to Grinnell. Through its rigorous selection process, Grinnell admitted 1,266 first-year students and 12 transfer students, resulting in an admittance rate of 12.7% for first-year students and 12.1% for transfer students. 

A Closer Look at the Class of 2027 

  • 49% of first-year students enrolling identify as white U.S. citizens or did not specify a racial background, while 51% represent a diverse array of identities.   
  • Grinnell’s international student population makes up 20% of the incoming class. 
  • This class brings students from 40 states, with California, Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota having the largest representation. 
  • This class also comprises an internationally diverse cohort from 34 different countries, including China, India, Brazil, Bulgaria and Bangladesh. 
  • 23% identify as students of color with another 7% of students identifying as being from two or more racial backgrounds. 
  • Notably, 10% of the class members identify as dual citizens, reflecting a sense of global interconnectedness. 

Grinnellians in Communities  

  • Grinnell students are known for their commitment to making a positive impact on the world, and the class of 2027 is no exception. 
  • 68% of incoming students engaged in community service during their high school years, affirming the College’s commitment to social responsibility. 
  • 64% of students participated in fine, creative, or performing arts activities, showcasing their passion for artistic expression. 
  • 62% of incoming students were involved in sports during their high school years, reflecting a spirit of athleticism fostered by the College. 
  • A remarkable 61% of students participated in work, internships, or other career-related activities during high school, demonstrating their ambition and dedication to their future careers. 
  • The commitment to effecting change in society is evident, with 27% of students having participated in student government, politics, or social justice activities. 

Joe Bagnoli, vice president for enrollment and dean of admission and financial aid said, “This geographically, racially, and ethnically diverse group of students brings with them a wealth of talents, ambitions, and global perspectives. From community service to artistic expression, athleticism, and a commitment to effecting change, these exceptional students are poised to create an atmosphere of discovery, collaboration, and growth. Their journeys at Grinnell will leave a profound and enduring impact, shaping a community of empowered individuals driven to make a positive difference in the world.” 

Grinnell’s student recruitment and admission criteria reflect deeply held institutional commitments to academic excellence, diversity, and social responsibility. Final enrollment statistics will be available in mid-to-late September.
