Students at Grinnell College have been putting their passion for animals into action through a collaboration with the Poweshiek Animal League Shelter (PALS), a local nonprofit dedicated to rescuing and rehoming animals. In partnership with PALS, Grinnell students have been socializing and helping dogs learn basic manners in order to give them a better chance of finding loving, forever homes.

Robert Gehorsam ’76 might be called a modern renaissance man. His career has spanned the entire arc of digital platforms and entertainment from the infancy of interactive online experiences through the introduction of generative artificial intelligence. He sees teaching Entrepreneurship and Social Change at Grinnell College as an outgrowth of his career as a “professional mentor.”

With the help of Head Coach Dana Harrold, the Grinnell Women’s Basketball team launched the Middle School Mentors program to help mentor local middle schoolers, share experiences, and foster supportive relationships.

Kate Ferraro ’12 and Belinda Backous are working to help students learn how to learn more effectively. Their latest project: a series of short videos inspired by TikTok.

Merel Timmermans ’22 came to Iowa from California, then joined the cross country team, explored her new hometown, and worked at an NGO in Mexico, all within her first year. A political science major, Merel caucused in Iowa during the election season, then found ways to maintain Grinnell community during Covid.

Grinnell has a proud tradition of neighbors helping neighbors, a dedication to service that dates back to the town’s founding. Here, we celebrate some of the Grinnellians whose generosity and dedication continue to make a difference in our community.
