Jyothis James

Jyothis James's research and teaching are situated in social and political philosophy, aesthetics, ethics, decolonialism, 19th- and 20th-century ethnology, and philosophy of race and gender. His work develops non-ideal, practice-centered approaches to dignity, democratic agency, and moral repair under conditions of structural injustice. He is currently working on his book, Vibrantly Vibing: An Invitation to a Black Everyday Aesthetics through the Black Dandy, which, drawing on Africana philosophy and the field of everyday aesthetics, argues that self-presentation and crafting a beautiful life are normatively serious responses to racialized harm. A second research program examines community-governed infrastructures as sites of responsibility when institutions fail.
