Mesenbet earned his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from Bahir Dar University in 2006 and graduated with distinction. He studied his LL.M at the University of Pretoria in 2008. He received his Ph.D from the National University of Ireland, Galway in 2017. His PhD thesis looked into the boundaries of political speech in a comparative perspective. Mesenbet has published extensively on human rights, freedom of expression, comparative constitutional law, and peace and security issues. He has presented his research findings in leading centers of excellence including at Yale School of Law, Loyola University Chicago School of Law, London School of Economics, University of Pretoria, and University of Seville. He has vast experience in consulting governmental, inter-governmental organizations including the UN, IGAD and non-governmental organizations at various levels. Recently, he was appointed to the UN Circle on the Right to Development, an expert group that supports the work of the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Development and promotes the UN mission of ensuring sustainable development for all.
