Protect Your Property

Larceny is the most common crime at Grinnell College. Larceny is a crime of opportunity and primarily occurs when the property is left in unlocked or unattended areas. In an attempt to mitigate the frequency of this crime on campus, the Department of Campus Safety suggests the following preventive measures:

  • Keep your door(s) when you're at home and when sleeping.  It’s easy for others to enter your residence without your awareness, particularly if you’re in a back room or have audio (e.g. music, video games, video streaming) playing.
  • Leave all valuables, particularly jewelry, at home if it is not necessary to have them at your campus residence.
  • Record the make, model, and serial number of valuables and keep the records in a safe place. It is also helpful to take and retain pictures of the items.
  • Consider engraving your property with your state identification or driver's license number.
  • Report lost keys or Pioneer One access cards to Campus Safety immediately.
  • Report any suspicious persons or activity to Campus Safety as soon as possible by calling 641-269-4600.
  • Keep all offices and workspaces locked when not in use.
  • Keep desk drawers and cabinets locked when not in use.
  • Utilize a key control system.  All department issued keys and authorized access should be issued only when absolutely necessary.
  • Leave all valuables at home if it is not necessary to have them at work.
  • Petty cash stored in offices or workspaces should be kept to a minimum.
  • Bags and purses should be kept locked up, and coats or jackets should not be left unattended with wallets or other valuables in the pockets.
  • Report lost keys or Pioneer One access cards to Campus Safety immediately.
  • Report any suspicious persons or activity to Campus Safety as soon as possible by calling 641-269-4600.
  • Avoid bringing cash, wallets, jewelry, and other valuables to the Athletic Facilities.
  • Avoid storing valuable sports equipment in your locker.
  • Keep your locker locked whenever unattended.  This includes times when you leave briefly to shower, visit the Athletic Training Room or the Equipment Room, etc.
  • Report lost keys or Pioneer One access cards to Campus Safety immediately by calling 641-269-4600.
  • Report any suspicious persons or activity to Campus Safety as soon as possible by calling 641-269-4600.
  • Secure your bicycle to a bicycle rack.  College policy does not allow bicycles to be stored in campus buildings or secured to trees, signposts, handrails, etc.
  • Record the make, model, and the serial number of your bicycle and keep it in a safe place.
  • Register your bicycle with the Department of Campus Safety.
  • Consider inscribing your bicycle with your state identification number or driver's license number.
  • Report suspicious persons or activity observed near bicycle racks to Campus Safety as soon as possible by calling 641-269-4600.

Motor Vehicles

  • Always roll up windows, close sunroofs, and lock your doors before leaving your vehicle.
  • Whenever possible, bring valuables with you once you have parked your vehicle.  If you can’t bring them with you, lock all valuables in the trunk and out of sight whenever your vehicle is parked.
  • Record the make, model, and license plate number of your vehicle and keep the records in a safe place.
  • Park your vehicle in a well-lit area and as close to your destination as possible.
  • When returning to your vehicle, keep your keys in hand while walking with confidence and purpose.
  • Report any suspicious persons or activity to Campus Safety as soon as possible by calling 641-269-4600.
