Narrow the gap between the familiar and the unfamiliar.
Faculty-led Learning Across the Globe (FLAG) programs take you on an investigation of a new place, culture, ecosystem, or region during a break with a faculty member. Ranging from about one to six weeks, they fit into any student’s busy schedule. Perfect for the athlete, the double major, or even those who would like to go off campus multiple times.
Course-Embedded Travel
Course-embedded travel allows you to study for a semester on campus as well as go abroad with your faculty and classmates for one or two weeks. These are typically 200-level courses and above that have an international perspective embedded. That perspective is bolstered by traveling to a particular site, either in the U.S. or abroad, during a fall or spring break or summer.
Athletes Abroad
Student athletes run a tight schedule. Often it feels hard to fit off-campus study into your four-year plan, even when your coaches are supportive of global learning. The Faculty-led Learning Across the Globe (FLAG) program allows athletic teams to engage in learning about a global topic over a short period on campus and then travel together both to earn credit for the learning abroad and to participate in some team competition abroad.
Research Abroad
Grinnell faculty may apply to conduct research at an international location and up to two students may go into the field to research with them. Faculty have taken students to India, Hawaii, Russia, Germany, Italy, Denmark and many other places for their research. Typically, this takes place during the summer for a period of about three weeks, but it could also be shorter and conducted during fall, spring, or even winter break.
Global Learning Program
First-year students get the chance to apply for a spot in the Global Learning Program (GLP) to learn from a pair of Grinnell faculty from different disciplines on campus and travel with them during one or two different breaks. The GLP culminates with global experiences that take you to two or more places for a total of three weeks!
