Alicia Stanley Receives Lifetime Achievement Award from International Education of Students (IES) Abroad

Alicia Stanley, director of off-campus study in the office of Institute for Global Engagement was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award presented by International Education of Student (IES) Abroad.  

This award recognizes Stanley for her tremendous work as a fierce champion of international education. Throughout her career, she has been dedicated to developing strong partnerships within and outside of her institutions, pursuing a holistic and inclusive approach to advising, and mentoring others. Stanley has served on a variety of education abroad advisory boards and committees, including a term as Vice Chair of the Forum Council as well as IES Abroad’s Academic Council and 60th Annual Conference Planning Committee.  

Stanley is a proud IES Abroad Paris alum who transitioned from working for French nonprofits to the field of education abroad when hired by IES Abroad. She started in Enrollment Management and then worked closely with Centers in France and Italy as Senior Program Associate in the Academic Department.  

Stanley joined Grinnell College in August 2017 where she oversees off-campus study in the US and abroad within the Institute for Global Engagement. Her advising during the global pandemic led to her being named an honorary class member by students of the graduating class of 2021. She previously held positions as Associate Director and Interim Director in Northwestern University’s Study Abroad Office and as Assistant Director of Operations and Associate Director for DePaul University’s Study Abroad Program. Stanley holds a M.A./M.S. in International Public Service Management from DePaul University, and a B.A. in French from Rice University. 

Commenting on her award, Stanley says: “It is an honor to receive this award from IES Abroad, an organization that has had such an impact on my career and journey through life as well as on the lives of countless others. My colleagues and I at Grinnell College value the expertise of IES Abroad staff as well as the advising, diversity, professional development, and many other resources they share as we navigate current challenges impacting our field and students.”

This award is given to an individual who has served the study abroad field through significant professional and volunteer work. The awardee is chosen by IES Abroad’s Nominations Committee, composed of study abroad professionals from top-tier colleges and universities across the United States. Recipients are exceptional leaders in the study abroad field whose careers have been distinguished by outstanding achievements and contributions.
