Grinnell College Theatre Presents “Everybody” Production

Sep 21, 2023

“Everybody,” written by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, is a play about the universal experience of life and death that premiered off-Broadway in 2017. A contemporary version of the 15th century morality play “Everyman,” “Everybody” explores abstract concepts through characters like Love, Evil, and Friendship. To emphasize the idea of the universal experience and to accentuate the randomness of death, the cast hosts a lottery every night to decide which actor will play which role.

Unique to this production of “Everybody,” the Grinnell College theatre program will incorporate live captioning into the performances, and on Sunday, Oct. 8 will host a Relaxed Performance, a more casual and welcoming version of the performances shown the previous days. Grinnell College’s “Everybody” production also includes collaborations with designers Jackie Fox and Kaelen Novak from New York and Iowa City , as well as with local Indonesian faculty Putu Tangkas Hiranmayena and Dewa Ayu Putri.

Minors under the age of 18 need to be accompanied by an adult. The college also welcomes the presence of minors at all age-appropriate public events and for informal visits, with the understanding that a parent, legal guardian, or other responsible adult assumes full responsibility for their child's safety and behavior during such visits or events. In these cases, the college expects that an adult responsible for the visiting child takes measures to ensure the child's safety and sees that the child complies with directions of college personnel. Grinnell College is not responsible for supervision of minors on campus.
