Michael Hewitt ’20 has been recognized as an Outstanding Intern by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists. Hewitt interned two summers with Grant Johnson, a physical chemist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Hewitt, along with Associate Professor of Chemistry Heriberto Hernandez and fellow Grinnellian Sophie Paek ’19, studied gold cluster synthesis with Johnson at the PNNL in the summer of 2018 through the DOE Visiting Faculty Program. Hewitt continued that research with Johnson for a second summer with a DOE Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship. This collaboration led to two publications for Hewitt, Hernandez, and Johnson.
