Roy Salcedo
Director of Intercultural Affairs - Laurel Scholars Student Specialist
Roy Salcedo (he/him/his) was born in Pico Rivera, California, and was raised in El Monte, California. His family relocated to Winterset, Iowa, a month before he turned 16. As a first-generation college student who came from a low socio-economic circumstance, he was not made aware of college until his junior year in high school when Mr. Triplett asked him, “So Roy, what college are you going to?” This question changed his life because in the question was the expectation to go to college.
Roy attended and graduated from Iowa State University of Science and Technology and has built a career helping students and others who strive to be good citizens as his mother always told him, “Mi’jo, be a good citizen!” His mother (Marie Elena Jacobo) was his biggest fan, and he called her 5 for 5 because all her 5 children have completed college. His mother’s (5) children and (11) grandchildren have a combined 12 degrees in higher education and more degrees to come.
In Roy’s time, he enjoys spending time with his family, his partner (Anne) and his 2 sons (Sammy and Anthony). He enjoys music, dancing, going to live concerts, audiobooks, yoga, biking, walking, traveling, and gardening.
