More than 180 people gathered at the Grinnell College Museum of Art on Sept. 17 to celebrate the opening of Abstract Expressionists: The Women. Featuring nearly 50 paintings by 32 artists, the exhibition shines a light on women whose work helped shape one of the most important movements in American art.

Building on decades of environmental education at Grinnell, the College will launch a new major in Environmental Studies (ENV), bringing together perspectives from across the curriculum and responding to strong student interest in the existing Environmental Studies concentration. At the same time, Grinnell will introduce Semester@CERA, an immersive program centered at the College’s 365-acre Conard Environmental Research Area (CERA).

I’ve been able to have [Dong’s] class and then go into her research. She’s such a supportive, thoughtful professor. It’s a good example of how students are able to develop very supportive relationships with their professors here.
Grinnell definitely prepared me for my future in medicine … good studying habits, how to keep up with courseload, how to advocate for myself in the classroom, seek out professors, and how to work with people. All of those skills got really fine-tuned at Grinnell.
Sports have always been important to me. At Grinnell, basketball was a bigger part of my life than ever before. Basketball helped me maintain balance.

Curated by 12 students enrolled in Professor of Art History Michael Mackenzie’s Exhibition Seminar, Rhizomatic Intimacies highlights the depth of student collaboration, experiential learning, and alumni partnership at Grinnell College. The exhibition, on display through March 29 and featuring photography from the private collection of Keith Jantzen ’80 and Scott Beth, explores themes of intimacy through portraiture, landscape, and the body.
