Myers will present the documentary she produced, Free Leonard Peltier.  President Joe Biden, just before leaving office, granted Peltier executive clemency and remanded him to house arrest after nearly 50 years of incarceration. But as the filmmakers say, “the fight is not yet over.”

Leonard Peltier was a young leader of the American Indian Movement in the 1970s, when he was convicted of a brutal crime based on falsified evidence. After global outrage and fifty years of failed appeals, FREE LEONARD PELTIER arrives to revive calls for his freedom. This time, things are different.

Imagining Native Futures

Drawing from his New York Times Bestselling book, THE HEARTBEAT OF WOUNDED KNEE, David Treuer will discuss the ways in which most thinking about Native peoples exists in a tragic narrative mode and understands Native people as only having a past, not a future. Treuer will turn this thinking on its head and suggest that Native and American futures are both intertwined and where our thinking should settle. 

New York Times bestselling author and editor David Treuer is Ojibwe from Leech Lake Reservation in northern Minnesota. He is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize, three Minnesota Book Awards, and fellowships from the NEH, Bush Foundation, and the Guggenheim Foundation, and was a Fellow at the American Academy Berlin.
