Student Health and Wellness

COVID-19 Information

  • All students are required to be fully vaccinated before arriving on campus. Those that do not have access to COVID-19 vaccinations and those with medical or religious exemptions will undergo daily testing for 7 days upon arrival to campus. If you are unvaccinated, you should wear a mask indoors. Please consider community health and wellbeing when making the choice to wear a mask.
  • Student Symptomatic Testing:
Students must meet with a nurse before scheduling a COVID test. Please contact SHAW at 641-269-3230 to schedule this appointment. View the CDC symptoms list and the Grinnell College protocol for testing.
  • Employee Symptomatic and Exposure Protocols
The College is working on developing a supply of (at) home tests to provide employees. Call HR at 641-269-4818 to arrange pick up.

We want to make it impeccably clear that our staff here at the Student Health and Wellness Center (SHAW) stands in solidarity with black people. All lives will not matter until Black Lives Matter.

Student Health and Wellness (SHAW) offers an integrated model of physical health and mental health services to support the personal and academic success of all Grinnell College students. Wellness, prevention, and health promotion empowers students and helps create an environment where pursuing health and wellness is possible. We utilize a holistic approach to emphasize the spectrum of prevention, intervention, and recovery for a range of health concerns which allows us to embrace and appreciate the differences of each student’s health and wellness needs. Most of our services are covered by the cost of tuition with no additional cost to the students (and not billed to insurance). In addition to nursing, counseling, and case management appointments, we offer a variety of programs, events, and advocacy to help students navigate the world’s complexities as it relates to health and wellbeing. We also help students connect with off-campus medical and mental health providers/specialists in the community when needed.

New for Fall 2021

East Door Locked

The east door will stay locked at all times. As this is the only accessible door, please call 641-269-3230 to gain access through this door. Otherwise, please use the west door (past the IT Help Desk).

Masks Required

All students will be required to wear a mask when entering SHAW for the entire Fall semester. This is true no matter what the current campus mask mandate is and regardless of vaccination status.

Appointment Scheduling

On-line nursing appointment scheduling has been disabled. We also discourage students from walking in to schedule an appointment. As appointment times are limited and to decrease the number of students in the lobby, please call 641-269-3230 to schedule an appointment.

24/7 Services

As of Sept. 1, 2021, SHAW is partnering with Virtual Care Group (VCG) to provide additional medical and counseling services to all students, available at any time.

Students must activate their account with VCG to unlock free, unlimited access to doctors and therapists + on-demand crisis counseling. To activate, visit the Grinnell College Virtual Care Group website, enter your last name, date of birth, and school zip code of 50112. Students can then review the providers and schedule a free telecounseling or telehealth visit.  All students are encouraged to download the VCG app and activate your account whether you plan on using this service or not.

While VCG does offer psychiatry, this service is not free for Grinnell College students (SHAW’s TelePsychiatry option is a wonderful resource for students, free of charge).

This service through VCG allows students to schedule appointments at a time that fits best with their schedule. It also allows students to schedule quickly if a wait-list exists for in-person appointments. We are happy to be able to offer this additional service to supplement our in-person nursing and counseling appointments.

Grinnell College is partnering with Neolth to provide this new on-demand health service.

Neolth is a digital platform that offers stress and mental health support to students that’s personalized and private. Students choose from a range of relaxation practices made from healthcare professionals, like breathing exercises, guided meditation and more.

Neolth helps students set and track their health goals. Each month, students unlock new self-care practices personalized for their needs. With Neolth, students have on-demand access to stress and mental health support. Built for students in partnership with students, Neolth is here to help.

Join the community today by creating an account at . Use your Grinnell email for free access.

SHAW supports students’ development of autonomy to feel empowered to make informed choices about their health and wellness during college and after they graduate. To help support this, a SHAW Student Advisory Council was formed.
