As the popular off-campus program turns 50, Grinnellians share their memories from the United Kingdom — and beyond

Grinnell alumnus and attorney Joseph Welch 1914 challenged Senator Joseph McCarthy in a 1954 congressional hearing. In the process, he helped bring about the end of McCarthyism.

Grinnell College is honored to announce that Isabel Alexis Wilkerson, celebrated author, Pulitzer Prize winner, and National Humanities Medal recipient, will deliver the 2025 Commencement address. Wilkerson, a leading voice in narrative nonfiction, is known for her compelling interpretation of the human condition.

Dear students, faculty, and staff, It is with deep sadness that we write to inform you that we have learned of the tragic death of Julian Sahlin ’28.  Julian was from Sunnyvale, CA, and graduated from Homestead High School in Cupertino, CA. 

Two members of the Grinnell College community have been recognized with prestigious civic engagement awards from Seed Coalition. Wiralba Pichardo ’25 – Recipient of the Presidents’ Student Leadership Award and Assistant Professor of Political Science, Andreas Jozwiak – Recipient of the Presidents’ Civic Engagement Leadership Award.

Sarah Toay ’23 has been awarded a C$10,000 McCall MacBain Regional Award for graduate study at any public university in Canada. The scholarship recognizes students who have demonstrated exceptional character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength, and intellectual curiosity.

Jerod Weinman, professor of computer science at Grinnell College, has been awarded a prestigious grant of $299,762 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to organize a National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) conference for four-year institutions (CCF-2515656).

The collection offers vivid insights into the daily lives of women and men, as well as emphasizing contrasts in regional, urban, and rural cultures.

This prestigious award enables faculty from institutions not classified as "Doctoral Universities: Very High Research Activity” or “Doctoral Universities: High Research Activity" to work alongside leading scientists at DOE-funded national labs during the summer.
