Maly ’61 International Student Leadership Award

The Nancy Schmulbach Maly ’61 International Student Leadership Award is presented annually to a third-year student who crossed international borders to attend Grinnell -- to recognize their leadership and engagement on campus and in the broader Grinnell community. Nominations are sought from Grinnell staff and faculty, and a small committee selects the final recipient. The award is presented each April, during the Division of Student Affairs Awards Ceremony. A plaque in the HSSC Global Living Room lists the recipients.

This award honors Nancy Schmulbach Maly’s extraordinary legacy of leadership and service to Grinnell’s global student body. In the 1970’s, Maly launched the College’s international student recruitment and admission program and served as its initial coordinator. Her commitment to student success and belonging also prompted the initial ‘international student advisor’ position, which has since evolved into the Office of International Student Affairs (OISA).
