Anoushka Shankar in Concert

Nov 5, 2013

Three-time Grammy nominee Anoushka Shankar is widely praised for her virtuoso sitar playing and experimental composition.

Shankar studied exclusively from the age of nine under her father and guru, Ravi Shankar, and her work is deeply rooted in Indian classical music. She has thrived as a composer, exploring the fertile ground in the crossover between traditional Indian music and a variety of genres, including flamenco, jazz, electronica, and Western classical music.

In October, Shankar released Traces of You, an album of some of her most intimate and daring music. Featuring Norah Jones (her half-sister) in several songs, Traces of You demonstrates Shankar’s characteristic explorations between musical genres.

Shankar will perform Monday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in Herrick Chapel.

She is accompanied by Pirashanna Thevarajah, Indian percussion; Manu Delago, percussion & Hang; Ayanna Witter-Johnson, vocals, cello, and keyboards; Danny Keane, cello and keyboards; and Sanjeev Shankar, shehnai and tanpura.

The performance is free and open to the public. Tickets are required and are available beginning Thursday, Nov. 7 at the box office from noon to 5 p.m. or the Pioneer Bookshop in downtown Grinnell.
