Will present:

Cleaning up Groundwater with Fe Minerals: A Scientist's Journey

Iron minerals are everywhere. These tiny, often nanoscale, minerals profoundly influence the quality of our water, air, and soil through the biologically-driven redox cycling between ferric and ferrous iron. We have used stable Fe isotopes in conjunction with 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy to study redox reactions between ferrous Fe and Fe oxides, as well as Fe containing clays. Our results have shown that sorbed Fe(II) is oxidized by Fe(III) in Fe oxides, such as goethite, hematite, ferrihydrite, and magnetite and that these minerals can degrade a variety of important groundwater contaminants. I will also share some of my thoughts on how and why I became an Environmental Engineer/Scientist and am happy to answer questions and discuss possible careers in Environmental Engineering/Science.
