Gabriel Espinosa, director of the Latin American Ensemble, has released a new album, “The Brazilian Project,” a recording that reflects both his deep musical roots and decades-long commitment to teaching and performance.
Espinosa, who has been a member of the Grinnell faculty for 22 years, is an internationally recognized bassist, composer, and educator. At Grinnell, he has played a central role in shaping student experiences through performance, mentorship, and cross-cultural exploration. His work with the Latin American Ensemble has given generations of students the opportunity to engage directly with musical traditions from across Latin America, often emphasizing collaboration, improvisation, and global awareness.
“The Brazilian Project” builds on Espinosa’s longstanding interest in Brazilian music, blending elements of samba, bossa nova, and jazz with his own compositional voice. The album features a range of accomplished collaborators and highlights Espinosa’s versatility as both a performer and bandleader.
A recent review from the online music magazine Paris-Move praises the album’s “rich textures and rhythmic vitality,” noting its seamless fusion of traditional Brazilian styles with contemporary jazz influences. The review highlights the album’s warmth, precision, and musical dialogue, calling it a compelling addition to Espinosa’s body of work.
Espinosa’s career spans performances and recordings across North and South America, as well as Europe, and includes collaborations with a wide array of internationally known artists. His work consistently reflects a commitment to cultural exchange and musical storytelling — values that are also central to his teaching at Grinnell.
With “The Brazilian Project,” Espinosa continues to bridge his roles as educator and artist, offering both students and listeners a vibrant example of music’s ability to connect traditions, disciplines, and communities.
