Political Science Expert to Give Scholars’ Convocation Lecture on Oct. 11

Kathy Cramer, professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will present a lecture, titled “Learning Well in a World that Turns Away,” as part of the Scholars’ Convocation Lecture Series. For nearly four decades, the series has created a common educational experience shared by the entire Grinnell College community and the local community. A committee of faculty members selects the lecturers.

Two more Scholars’ Convocations are scheduled for the 2018 fall semester. On Thursday, Nov. 8,  the lecture will feature LaDonna Redmond, founder and executive director of the Campaign for Food Justice Now. On Thursday, Nov. 15, the lecturer will be Alexander Payne, film director, screenwriter and producer known for his films, Nebraska, About Schmidt, The Descendants, as well as Downsizing.

Speaker Bio

Kathy Cramer is professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her work focuses on the way people in the United States make sense of politics and their place in it. She is known for her innovative approach to the study of public opinion, in which she invites herself into the conversations of groups of people to listen to the way they understand public affairs.

Her award-winning book, The Politics of Resentment: Rural Consciousness in Wisconsin and the Rise of Scott Walker, examines rural resentment toward cities and its implications for contemporary politics. It gained widespread attention after the 2016 presidential election because of its relevance for explaining support for Donald Trump. She is also author of Talking about Race: Community Dialogues and the Politics of Difference and Talking about Politics: Informal Groups and Social Identity in American Life.
