Globally-Informed Experiences

A native of Grinnell, Iowa, Amaris told people during her senior year of high school there was “no way” she’d go to Grinnell College because she wanted to leave town. Nevertheless, she applied, and after she was admitted, she visited campus to investigate what the College had to offer. Two things especially attracted her — the small class sizes and the idea of studying abroad. Through mentored research, Amaris developed more confidence to pursue her own ideas and knowledge. And through rich global learning opportunities, she developed the ability to thrive in settings around the world.

I did an internship in London, and that’s when I sort of started getting interested in arts admin. I wanted to explore that more. I worked for Professor [Craig] Quintero my senior year as assistant to the theatre department chair. That was a lot of administration work, and that made me more interested in it.

“I did a [Mentored Advanced Project] in Taiwan [60 30-minute performances of Night Magic to one audience member each] that was really great in terms of getting a professional theatre experience. It was really cool to be able to get that experience under my belt and to be able to be in that professional performing environment and to know what that schedule is like and how rigorous it is. And I think that was helpful in determining whether or not I wanted to do this as a job.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do after graduation, but I wanted to work in theatre somewhere. So I applied to a bunch of different programs that were either apprenticeships or residencies or paid internships where I could get my foot in the door in the professional theatre world.”
